Wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) have a history in the power generation industry and have become increasingly popular in the recent years. As all the other forms of power generation, it is important that these sources are reliable and resilient with the ability to sustain harsh electrical system conditions. Part of this resilience comes in the form of effective electrical protection systems, which can identify and clear faults in the most efficient manner. This paper presents a novel electrical protection scheme for wind turbines, namely, AC Synchronous Dynamic Resistance (SDR) with switching. The aim of the paper is to investigate the performance of the turbine when the scheme is applied against a case where there is no form of protection. It is observed from studies that the proposed protection scheme has a positive effect on the WECS performance during and after the fault, reducing voltage overshoot as well as dampening active power oscillations.
