The paper emphasizes the results of the first systematic study concerning the electromagnetic field distribution inside a recently rehabilitated 400/220 kV high voltage substation belonging to the Romanian national Power Grid Company Transelectrica S.A., in order to face the EU legislation regarding the occupational exposure to the electromagnetic fields. In the first part of the paper electric and magnetic field computation methods inside substations are outlined. It will be briefly presented a software package developed by the authors dedicated to the electric field computation inside substations. In the second part of the paper the experimental field measurement results are presented. The high intensity field zones are highlighted and the highest field values found are compared with the exposure limits given by the actual legislation. Comparisons between computed and measured field distributions are emphasized. The final conclusions of the study performed end the paper.
