As we rely increasingly on numerical simulations to evaluate safety of RF fields in MRI, there lies a danger in treating the simulations like a "black box" and trusting results that may not be correct. An intuitive understanding of what to expect in general can help avoid such a situation. Here we examine what to expect in terms of Specific energy Absorption Rate (SAR) distributions for different types of surface coils and for volume coils both in the quasi-static regime and when wavelength effects become significant.
