Film and splash bar fills have been the primary heat exchanging material in a cooling tower for many years. While splash fills are unbeatable, when it comes to fouling, they struggle with requiring a larger tower sizes and large pump head requirements to meet the same thermal performance as film fills in a counter-flow application. This is why film fill has been the main choice to construct the most efficient, economical cooling towers. In recent years there has been a further push from governing organizations for using alternate -less clean - water sources and or higher cycles of concentration which has created a new position and more issues concerning clogging. With these new plant requirements, modular splash fill has become more and more into the focus as an alternative solution. Therefore, in this paper, we will outline the properties of modular splash fill in direct comparison with the two well-known fill types. There will be information about performance, fouling, maintenance and durability. To give a more applicatory view on this type of fill, in the end there will be two case studies to underline the general information given before.
