High Performance Surface Coatings for Bolted Slip-Critical Connections

Slip-critical connections have long been used in steel structures where joints are subjected to fatigue and joints with oversized and slotted holes. The understanding of the behavior of these connections through experimental testing has resulted in limited maximum slip coefficients with extensive surface preparation. The use and development of high performance surface coatings (HPSC) is one possible route to greatly increase the strength and promote construction using slip-critical connections. In this study a HPSC is developed which is economical and easy to apply. The experimental program preliminarily characterizes the formulation development of the HPSC. Particle size distribution and density of the HPSC are varied. From simple shear tests of activated HPSC on steel plates, analysis of the results indicate that HPSCs provide more stable and predictable behavior than unfinished or mill scale surfaces. Recommendations are made for continued development based on the preliminary results of this study.
