This paper discusses a DSP/FPGA-based control system for a permanent magnet machine with concentrated windings. In this setup each coil is driven by a separate H-bridge inverter. Operation is considered under normal and fault condition. An interleaved modulation technique is introduced and compared with two standard modulations. A control for a 12-slot 8-pole machine with field orientation in single coil operation is derived. For operation under inverter failure, a pole turn off mechanism is presented which allows deactivation of single poles. For communication failure between the central control board and the stator teeth modules, an autonomous sensorless hysteresis control is proposed. The system consists of a flexible hardware and communication architecture, which is scalable to different stator slot and rotor pole configurations.
