The objective of this study is to ensure that a transition-to-island mode of the intentional facility island defined in IEEE 1547.4-2011 can be properly formed by a residential photovoltaic (PV) system with sufficient capacity in the transient state after an electrical fault occurs on a distribution line external to the island. Using DIgSILENT, this study (1) modifies the IEEE 37-bus test feeder as an example of the distribution network enhanced by a residential PV system able to provide sufficient power to a predefined island, (2) generates a single line-to-ground fault on 50 percent of a distribution line external to the island, and (3) forms an intentional island supplied by a residential PV system with sufficient power. Finally, this study analyzes a transition-to-island mode of the intentional island in a transient state and addresses a few challenges to a smooth transition to an island mode.
