The combustion of biomass fuels in steam boiler plant allows the production of clean energy from a renewable source. To ensure the continued long life of boiler components under more aggressive biomass, rather than fossil fuel, firing conditions the use of coatings as a means of improving the high temperature corrosion performance of typical superheater/reheater materials has been explored. The work presented describes the development of a novel Ni-AI coating system, which has been conceived with practical application in the field in mind, and compares its characteristics with those of coatings produced using a high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) and laser cladding techniques.
