A Novel Method to Determine Particulate Size and Depth-location of Contaminant within Used Filtration Media

摘要

A novel method using Computer Tomography Scanning (CT scan) has been developed to characterize particulate loading within lab-tested and field-returned filtration media. Using this method, one can visualize both media fibrous structure and determine the size of particulates captured, plus their location within the depth of the structure. The CT scan method resolves particles and fibers as small as 2 urn providing diameter and the 3 dimensional position of each particle reported. Using the CT scan data, a new analysis and data-reduction method was also developed to analyze and visualize the data in such a way that the depth-loading of multi-layer filtration media such as StrataPore□ or NanoNetn media can be better understood and continuously improved. Example results will be shown to illustrate the benefits provided by multi-layered gradient media as compared to traditional single-layer or other simpler structures.
