The AS-FGD technology can be a compelling alternative to conventional limestone or lime -based wet scrubbing. Advantages of the AS-FGD include: generation of revenues by sale of the AS byproduct; potentially lower fuel costs; avoidance of costs/liabilities in terms of solid and liquid waste handling/disposal; and, positive factors relating to greenhouse gas mitigation including the fact that no additional CO_2 is generated in this FGD process and that the AS nutrients enhance crop growth which, in turn, enhances CO_2 consumption from the atmosphere. This process has been commercially proven in full-scale operation at Dakota Gasification for almost twenty years and at a Canadian petrochemical site for over nine years. A third commercial plant consisting of two AS-FGD absorbers servicing four 100-MWe coal boilers and designed for 98% SO_2 removal was placed in service at a Chinese petrochemical plant in 2009. The AS-FGD installation at Zaklady Azotowe "Pulawy" was the first application of MET's AS-FGD technology in Europe and was placed in service in 2012. The second European installation at Zaklady Azotowe Police in Szechin, Poland is expected to go into commercial operation in 2016.
