Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) are essential to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector. Wide scale adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) has been challenging also due to the limited range and long charging times. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) using hydrogen infrastructure with the SAE J2601 and J2799 standards can however be consistently fueled safely, quickly and with a long driving range. SAE created a protocol to standardize hydrogen fueling for FCEV worldwide based on modeling, lab and real-world data. Fueling according to SAE J2601 with the communications standard SAE J2799 enables FCEVs to fill with hydrogen in 3-5 minutes and to achieve a consistent high State of Charge (SOC), resulting in 300+ mile range, without exceeding the safety storage limits. After 13 years of development, the J2601 and J2799 standards published in 2014 enables the first generation of commercial FCEVs and infrastructure to achieve the "same as today" fueling experience and vehicle range.
