Developing Space Vehicle Payload Commands Using a Model-based CONOPS

A graphical model-based concept of operations (CONOPS) can be used to transform high-level system use cases (UCs) and operational activities into a series of discrete space vehicle payload commands including those which constitute the payload mission deck. This approach begins with a stakeholder's high-level operational concept (HLOC) and the identification of an ordered progression of UCs to indicate a mission thread. Through stages of functional decomposition, atomic level functions for each configuration item (CI) are identified. The sequence of payload operations become the series of commands the payload must execute during a mission and include the messages which become the payload mission deck. The graphical artifacts generated during the analysis can be presented on the Enhanced OV-5a diagram showing the development of payload commands beginning with the top level UC.
