摘要

The applicability of a network-based mobile positioning system in cellular networks for navigation raises grave concern because of the resulting high signaling load due to continuous tracking. In this paper we describe a navigation system involving a mobile-device-based positioning method in the idle mode. The positioning is based on cell IDs and radio signal strength indicators of the serving cell and its neighbors. In order to improve location accuracy and to infer guidance information, movement detection based on the signal strengths indications and a road map database are involved in the process. The aim of this system is to obtain a better availability than GPS-based ones in the urban areas. In the cellular context, for example 3G networks where a more accurate positioning like A-GPS is implemented, this system can be used as the supplementary positioning and guidance system in areas where the availability of the GPS is very low.
