Aromatic polycarboxylic acids could serve as formaldehyde free crosslinking agents of cotton fabrics. The reaction between the aromatic acids with cellulose is a direct esterification reaction, without formation of anhydride as an intermediate in the reaction. Several alkaline salts of phosphorus containing acids can serve as catalysts of the reaction. The catalytic effects of different sodium salts are related to the acidity of corresponding acids and pH conditions of finishing baths. Different aromatic polycarboxylic acid was employed in crosslinking cellulose, and new structural requirements are established in searching for ideal ones.
