A Water Distribution Network (WDN) is an important infrastructure of a city used for providing water for domestic as well as industrial uses. WDNs are used to transport water from sources such as dams, lakes and ponds to spatially-distributed consumers at the demand points through a network of pipes, valves and pumps such that their demands are met at desired pressures. Smart operation of urban WDNs is based on optimizing one or more performance metrics while meeting consumer demands and satisfying supply side and storage constraints. Smart monitoring of WDNs involves processing the available information and identifying source of disruptions or performance degradations.
