To examine the feasibility of gaseous nitriding in the ferrovanadium melts, based on thermodynamic calculations by FactSage software, a tubular furnace experiment was conducted with FeV50 alloy and N_2 at 1873K-1923K. The nitrogenous ferrovanadium alloy prepared was characterized by Chemical Analysis, XRD, and SEM to understand its composition and morphology. From thermodynamic calculations the equilibrium nitrogen content in the ferrovanadium melts can reach to about 10 wt. %. By experimental analysis the highest nitrogen content of the alloy is 4.34 wt. % and the contents of vanadium and ferrous are 45.10 wt. % and 44.80 wt. % respectively. The nitrogenous ferrovanadium alloy mainly consists of V, Fe, V_2N, VN, V_5O_9, and SiO_2. The nitride mainly dispersed in the vanadium rich phase in the form of vanadium nitride.
