Because pure platinum is not stable enough for long-term fuel cell operation, researches have been devoted to the development of efficient catalysts for ethanol electrooxidation. To enhance the efficiency of the Pt-based catalysts, a second or third metal is usually added as a co-catalyst. PtSn catalysts are known to be the best composition for ethanol oxidation; however, this composition still requires improvement for application in commercial operational conditions. Therefore, we have introduced manganese and manganese oxides into these catalysts, because they display interesting catalytic properties for the oxidation of small organic molecules, such as excellent proton conductivity, which make them promising co-catalysts or carrier support in fuel cells.
