Medium Voltage (MV) AC drives are increasingly used in high-power marine applications for running thrusters and main propulsion motors. In this paper, a transformer-less MV drive solution with an active front-end is proposed. The referenced drive system can be used with induction, synchronous (single or dual winding), or with permanent magnet synchronous motors. Both configurations are discussed in detail in this paper. Field oriented control method with an encoder is described. Major advantages of the proposed solution include simple structure, low-harmonic input/output waveforms, improved reliability and elimination of the input isolation transformer. In addition, the system offers input power factor compensation and dynamic braking to allow operation on a generator based supply system. Successful sea trials carried out on main propulsion systems based on a single winding 5MW induction motor, and a 7MW dual winding synchronous motor demonstrate the system performance.
