1. Antifoam - Prevents the formation of foam 2. Defoamer - Destroys existing foam 3. Surfactant - A compound or molecule that has a Hydrophobic end and a Hydrophilic end. Surfactant means Surface Active Agent. It will reduce the surface tension of water. 4. Lamella - Bubble wall (a double layer of surfactant with water between the surfactant layers) 5. Surface tension - Represented by the symbol y (gamma) is defined as the force along a line of unit length, where the force is parallel to the surface but perpendicular to the line. Typical units are dyne/cm 6. Surface energy - Quantifies the disruption of intermolecular bonds that occurs when a surface is created. Units are J/M~2 For a liquid, the surface tension (force per unit length) and the surface energy density are identical. Water has a surface energy density of 0.072 J/m~2 and a surface tension of 0.072 N/m or 72 dynes/cm. 7. Interfacial Tension - Interfacial tension is somewhat similar to surface tension in that cohesive forces are also involved. However the main forces involved in interfacial tension are adhesive forces (tension) between the liquid phase of one substance and either a solid, liquid, or gas phase of another substance. The interaction occurs at the surfaces of the substances involved, that is at their interfaces.
