Taizen Co., Ltd. has developed a high efficiency pulp washer for washing of pulp in the recycling process. It has a unique vertical design which consists of a vertical drum screen and a shaft with impeller located in the drum. The drum screen and the impeller rotate in opposite directions. The pulp slurry enters the drum screen from the bottom and the thickened washed pulp is discharged from the top. The rotating impeller prevents mat formation inside of the drum screen. Water including suspended ash and fines is removed through the small holes on the drum screen by centrifugal force and the long fibers remain inside. Since this design prevents formation of a pulp mat on the screen surface, this vertical washer achieves higher dewatering efficiency, higher filler removal rate, improved freeness, and lower residual ink particles than with traditional pulp washers. It includes an automatic cleaning mechanism that incorporates two types of showers for the drum screen. Dilution water is not required if consistency of the pulp slurry is 1.5% or less. The vertical washer can be used not only for pulp washing and thickening but also for fiber recovery from waste streams in recycle mills.
