An Evolutionary Approach to Paper Quality Control System Life Cycle Management

QCS suppliers should develop systems to be further modularized and provide backward compatibility in newly developed components, for better support of stepwise upgrades and migrations. They also need to provide detailed life cycle plans to allow paper makers to plan and budget for avoiding obsolescence situations. Performance of QCS systems can also be monitored more actively to help guide investments to areas where upgrades and system extensions have the most effect in achieving performance improvements. With such support, paper makers can better adapt to stepwise migration and incremental investments, rather than complete system replacements which are more capital intensive. The benefit is higher performance of the QCS system over its entire life cycle and an organizational focus on continuous improvements in process control.
