In this preliminary study, comparisons between two sampling sites in Sao Paulo State were made in order to highlight the influence of local emissions (e.g., vehicles in MASP and industries in Cubatao), as well as wind and SO_2 dispersion patterns in Cubatao City. Concentrations of sodium, chloride, nitrate, calcium and sulfate ions were higher in Cubatao than at MASP. In Cubatao, topography, and lower wind speeds associated with the sea-breeze circulation hinder the dispersion of air pollutants. The 99th percentile SO_2 concentrations in MASP (Congonhas) were one-fourth of levels at Vila Parisi's, indicating that Cubatao concentrations are still a matter of concern and could result in severe air pollution episodes.
