Recent Dam Safety Innovations: Dam Dragnet, Dam First Aid, Dam Watch, Simplified Inundation Mapping, in the Virginia Dam Safety Floodplain Management Program

Virginia Dam Safety Program is focused on innovations to improve public safety of dams and to assist dam owners with these challenges. Due to a change in the size of regulated size dams in Virginia, Dam Dragnet was developed to locate all the dams of regulated size in Virginia. Dam First Aid was developed to assist dam owners with emergencies by providing trailers with siphoning equipment to lower lake levels for repairs. To increase warning times of a dam break and improve public safety, Dam Watch was adopted to reduce the potential liability of dam owners who are liable for loss of life and property damage from a dam failure. Since all regulated dams in Virginia are required to obtain a dam break inundation model and map for hazard determination and emergency action plans, Simplified Inundation Mapping is offered at low cost to assist owners of apparently low hazard dams to meet these safety requirements.
