SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) was designed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). The standard design approval for the SMART design was issued on July 4th 2012 by a Korean regulatory body. The main components include a pressurizer, steam generators, and reactor coolant pumps. They are installed in a reactor pressure vessel, and there are no large-size pipes. The safety systems could be simplified as an LBLOCA (Large-Break Loss of Coolant Accident) scenario is inherently excluded. An integral-effect test loop for SMART, SMART-ITL, has been constructed at KAERI. The objectives of SMART-ITL are to investigate and understand the integral performance of the reactor systems and components, and the thermal-hydraulic phenomena occurring in the system during normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions, and to verify the system safety during various design basis events of SMART. A series of small-break loss-of-coolant accident (SBLOCA) tests was performed by KAERI using the SMART-ITL. This paper presents the major results of an SBLOCA test for the safety injection system (SIS) line break. They have been analyzed using the best-estimate system code, MARS-KS, which was developed by KAERI to assess its simulation capability on the SBLOCA scenario for the SMART design. The scenarios of SBLOCA in the SMART design were reproduced well using the SMART-ITL facility and MARS-KS code. The simulation results using the MARS-KS code is in good agreement with the test results using the SMART-ITL.
