A 2-Span Mask Algorithm for Optimal Scheduling with Discontinuous Fuel Cost Function

Although the artificial intelligent methods can solve UC problems embodied in system constraints such as start-up cost, spinning reserve requirements, ramp rate limits, discontinuous fuel cost function, etc., it is difficult to obtain global optimal solution. Also its calculating time is long in a complex power system due to stochastic optimization algorithm. This chapter uses a reasonable hypothesis; the sum of maximum power generated by all online units for a combination is approaching the total load; the probability of the combination being optimum is high. Then, both boundary factors to find a potential search space are applied. 2SM method is used to find the best unit scheduling. LBR and DCA are employed to avoid entrapment into a local optimum due to generation ramp rate of unit and unit with discontinuous fuel cost function, respectively. Simulated results demonstrate the outstanding performance of the proposed algorithm.
