During the last decade, there been has a significant increase of interest in the computer-aided diagnosis of skin cancer. Given the development of the suitable image processing algorithms and the advances in skin imaging technology, an approach to implementation of the image enhancement techniques using field programmable gate array (FPGA) is presented in this paper. The enhancement such as contrast and brightness manipulation, gray level transform, invert transform and also thresholding techniques are described and implemented using a Hardware Description Language (Verilog HDL). A Verilog-based system for sequential processing of an image using four classical algorithms is presented, in order to obtain an optimal solution to border detection in skin lesion (tumor) images.
