Bio-Based Succinic Acid Polyester Polyois: Sustainable Building Blocks for Performance Driven TPUs, PUDs and Coatings

BioAmber has developed and brought to manufacturing scale a high efficiency fermentation method to produce bio-based succinic acid (Bio-SA) in high yield and purity. The fermentation method produces this key building block for polyesters and urethanes cleanly and with lower energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than either its petrochemical twin or adipic acid. Succinic acid is a key building block useful in a variety of applications ranging from personal care and food applications to industrial applications such as polyester thermoplastics, polyester based resins and polyurethane (PU) applications. The BioAmber applications development team has been active in these fields to help the PU market understand the performance advantages of the succinic acid building block in these applications. This article will highlight recent applications activities in polyurethane elastomers, PU dispersion (PUDs) and coatings. Key among these findings are the advantages of succinate polyester polyols as performance and sustainable building blocks in PU coatings with improved solvent and abrasion resistance and in the development of polyester polyois with controllable glass transition temperature (Tg), melting point transition (Tm) and viscosity profiles.
