Comparison of Construction Efficiency between China and United States: Using DEA Model

摘要

This paper compares the construction efficiency development between China and United States in the past 22 years based on DEA method to find out the factors that affect the efficiency in both countries. Firstly, establish the indicator system. Then, select the data of gross output, profit, fixed capital, and the number of employees of China and United States from 1990 to 2011 and then, use year as DMU to calculate the efficiency over the 22 years of both countries respectively. The results show the efficiency of China changes rapidly over the 22 years and depends mostly on the scale efficiency. Besides, overinvestment and lack of technology also exist in Chinese construction industry. And the U.S has developed completely and stabilized at an even and high level. This article presents the study on using year as DMU and making comparison between different countries. By comparing and studying the experience from U.S, this paper provides some suggestions on Chinese construction industry.
