Ven Te Chow and Deterministic Hydrology

The author first reviews the situation in hydraulics and hydrology in the early 1950s and calls to mind the impact of the publication of Chow's "Open Channels Hydraulics" in 1959 and of the publication of the "Handbook of Applied Hydrology" in 1964. The team of graduate students K.P. Singh, V.C. Kulandaiswamy, M.H. Diskin and R. Prasad played an important role in the development of the Handbook chapter on "Runoff. Their works are reviewed as well as that of A.R. Rao, who completed his dissertation after the Handbook publication but who is a good example of the excellent work that took place in Dr. Chow's group in the 1960s. The work of Dr. Ben C. Yen illustrates the legacy of Dr. Ven Te Chow in deterministic hydrology. Some of the elementary concepts of the unit hydrograph are summarized before the overview of Dr. Chow's graduate students work and some later development are summarized as well.
