THE IMPORTANCE OF PROLIFERATION OF THE ARTERIAL WALL IN FORMATION OF SACCULAR CEREBRAL ANEURYSMS

Cerebral aneurysms are an important cerebrovascular condition because aneurysm rupture is the most common cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage, which has a high mortality rate and a poor prognosis. Since the mechanism of cerebral aneurysm pathogenesis has not yet been understood, the preventative treatment for unruptured aneurysms is surgery only; however, the morbidity of the surgery is as high as over 10%. On the other hand, the annual risk of rupture of cerebral aneurysms is not so high, reported to be 1.9%. Consequently, it is difficult to judge whether a patient with an unruptured cerebral aneurysm should undergo surgery, when it is detected.
