A 14pJ/pulse-TX, 0.18nJ/b-RX, 100Mbps, channelized, IR-UWB transceiver for centimeter-to-meter range biotelemetry

This paper presents an energy-efficient, customizable, high-data-rate, impulse radio ultra wideband (IR-UWB) transceiver, operating in three channels within 3–5GHz for centimeter-to-meter range biotelemetry. Fabricated in 90nm 1P/9M CMOS, the transceiver integrates an all-digital transmitter (TX) with a waveform-synthesis pulse generator and a timing generator for pulse modulation and phase scrambling, as well as a non-coherent receiver (RX) with front-end RF amplification/filtering, self-correlation for energy detection and digital synchronization of the baseband clock and data. The TX can be digitally programmed to operate in three bandwidth-adjustable channels with their FCC-compliant power spectral density (PSD) centered at ∼3.4, 4.1 and 4.65GHz. The RX RF front-end can provide up to 37dB of gain with adjustable bandwidth, fast roll-off and tunable center frequency at 3.5, 4 and 4.5GHz for channel selection and robustness against out-of-band noise/interference. With two off-chip, UWB antennae, wireless transfer of pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) data at 100Mbps over 2m is shown with TX and RX energy consumption of 14pJ/pulse and 0.18nJ/b, respectively, from 1.2V.
