In this paper we describe the system design, implementation and results from a software-defined statistical MIMO radar system that operates in the 915 MHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band. The system was designed to validate multi-static and statistical MIMO radar techniques on real moving target data. Two independent radar systems were implemented. We discuss the overall system design and highlight some of the design challenges that were encountered during the process, e.g., signal leakage path from transmitter to receiver, synchronization, and out-of-band interference. The empirical results show that multi-static MIMO radar techniques on real moving target data echo theoretical performance.
