Dr. Takao Masumoto is Director of Research Division for Regionaland Renewable Resources Engineering, National Research Institutefor Rural Engineering, NARO, Japan and Professor of Hydrology,Water Resources and Environment, Graduate School of Life andEnvironmental Science, University of Tsukuba. He has 30 years ofresearch experience related to hydrology and water resources inMonsoon Asia regions. Research activities include: (1) investigationof urbanization effects on fl ood processes and fl ood simulation inpaddy-dominant river basins; (2) systems analysis of optimal drainagefacilities in low-lying areas; (3) analyses of hydrological functions ofagricultural lands, such as fl ood prevention and water resources fostering, and its usage onregional fl ood protection; (4) impact assessment of global-scale changes in water cycles onfood production and alternative policy scenarios; and (5) development of a distributed watercirculation model incorporating agricultural water use (DWCM-AgWU model). Recent workincluded impact assessment of extremes under climate change and anthropogenic activitieson water/land resources and adaptation measures. His current research is on the developmentof water footprint criteria for agricultural water use and that of a Seamless DIF (DistributedWater Circulation, Inundation and Flood) model combined with irrigation and fl oods. Heworked at Mekong River Commission Secretariat as Senior Advisor (Hydrology) for 2 yrs. Hereceived several prizes of Science Encouragement, Science, Sawada, Excellent Technology/Paper Awards from JSDIRE and International Award from PAWEES. He has served aseditors of Paddy & Water Env., ICID Irrigat. & Drain. and JARQ. He was appointed as ReviewEditor for a Special Report (SREX) by IPCC.
