摘要

This paper will compare established theory on Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) processesto in-field observations and quantitative measurement, and seek to identify key factors that are involvedin the rate of mooring degradation. Early identification is imperative to mitigate risk associated with MICprocesses that may cause severe corrosion, such as Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) corrosion. The firststep to identify severe MIC processes is to recognise visual indicators, ideally followed by laboratorytesting to confirm. Once the likelihood of adverse MIC is identified, a focussed inspection must be carriedout in the locations most likely to be affected. Welaptega’s field observations show that variables such asmooring dynamics and water temperature may play key roles.
