1 Balancing safety with environmentalprotection is a key future challenge forregulators.2 New EEDI requirements call forreducing engine power and, at thesame time, for minimum power toensure safe manoeuvring in adverseconditions.3 A consistent regulation is needed.4 Current knowledge to define adverseconditions and capabilities to check thevessel’s performance are in researchstage.Two new R&D projects (PerSeeand SHOPERA) address this challenge.
