Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are being investigated for its use as a biodegradable metallic scaffold for bone tissue engineering applications. In this manuscript we report the formation of natural polyelectrolyte layer by layer (LBL) coating on magnesium alloy which could serve as a matrix to support the growth and differentiation of cells. Chitosan and pectin polyelectrolyte LBL coatings were formed on magnesium alloy. The coatings formed were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), contact angle measurements and electrochemical tests. SEM images confirmed formation of the LBL coatings. The LBL coatings did not affect surface property and biodegradation behavior of the underlying magnesium alloy as indicated by contact angle measurement and electrochemical corrosion tests respectively.
