An Approach for Estimating System-Wide Environmental Benefits of Future Air Traffic Management Concepts

Environmental implications of aviation activity are increasingly an area of global concern. Performance goals related to reduction in aviation-related fuel consumption, emissions, and noise are prominently featured in proposed modernization plans for air transportation systems in addition to goals related to capacity, efficiency, safety, and security. An in-depth understanding of tradeoffs and synergies among these various performance objectives will aid stakeholders in making investment decisions about future technologies and procedures. This paper presents an approach for conducting integrated assessments with air traffic simulation tools and environmental models to evaluate changes in system-wide operational and environmental performance resulting from proposed improvements. The methods described are illustrated through a notional analysis of projected future airport capacity improvements in the U.S.
