New Zeolite Pigments for TiO_2 Extension

The paper industry is searching for ways to reduce their titanium dioxide usage. TiO_2 is unarguably the best pigment for opacity due to its refractive index. However, its relatively higher cost compared to common coating pigments leaves the formulator open to evaluating potential alternatives. Sodium aluminosilicates have been utilized as a titanium dioxide extender in many other applications but with limited success in paper applications. This paper examines new zeolite pigment offerings that maintain optical properties of coatings while reducing titanium dioxide usage in paper coatings.
