Reactive Permeable Blankets for Cleanup of Contaminated Liquids

There are thousands of old unlined landfills and industrial waste sites in the U.S. where ground water is impacted. In this paper we have presented a relatively new technology called reactive permeable blankets that can be used to cleanup the ground water or leachate. This technology could be relatively cheaper and would offer faster cleanup time compared to conventional passive vertical permeable reactive barriers. The permeable blanket technology has been field tested for leachate recirculation in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills. In this paper we have presented the conceptual model to implement this technology as an active remediation method for old landfills or other industrial sites.
