In this paper, a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) is designed to be competitive to a benchmark brushless DC (BLDC) motor used in a blower of an air conditioner in terms of motor performance and material costs. The same stator structure of the BLDC motor is utilized for the designed SynRM to keep the same production procedure. The motor performances are determined by using a design software tool together with a finite-element analysis. The material cost analysis is based on the material costs obtained from the manufacturer. The motor performance of the designed SynRM can achieve the same efficiency level of the benchmark BLDC motor with the material cost reduction up to 50%.
