The calculable dipole antenna gives traceability of E-field strength via antenna factor, and enables validation of EMC test sites, both to uncertainties of less than 0.5 dB over the frequency range 20 MHz to 1000 MHz. A broadband calculable antenna is described for which the site insertion loss between a pair of dipoles agrees with prediction to better than 0.4 dB. Predicted performance is traditionally confirmed by measurements in the far-field, but it is shown that validation in the near-field has lower uncertainties and can be economically more attractive. The final technical draft of CISPR 16–1–5 describes the principles of operation and mathematical modelling of the antenna.
