From the data presented it is clear that issues encountered in the field for HC1 response testing should first look at the materials used, the flow rate of the test gas and the regulator as culprits in the retention of the HC1 gas. Adherence to the procedures shown in the paper above provide the ability to easily use low level HC1 dry standards in the field. Therefore, it is not necessary, nor recommended, to run humidified HC1 calibration gas, at least up to the limits done for this testing. Humidification can add significant complexity to a calibration system and adds the possibility of condensation of water vapor which will cause increased response time due to HC1 absorption into the liquid phase. For best HCL test results PTFE calibration and heated sample lines should be used along with a dedicated Dursan - coated SS regulator that is never removed from the gas cylinder. Proper installation and pressure purging after the regular is installed will greatly reduce the chance of HC1 retention.
