RISK COMMUNICATION WITH FUKUSHIMA RESIDENTS AFFECTED BY THE FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI ACCIDENT AT WHOLE-BODY COUNTING

After the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, the Tokai Research and Development Center of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) had direct dialogue as risk communication with Fukushima residents who sought out whole-body counting (WBC). The purpose of the risk communication was to exchange information and opinions about radiation in order to mitigate Fukushima residents' anxiety and stress. Two kinds of opinion surveys were administered: one survey evaluated residents' views of the nuclear accident itself and the other evaluated the administration of the WBC as well as the quality of JAEA 's risk communication skills. The results of the risk communication and the two opinion surveys show that Fukushima residents have the most anxiety about their long-term health and a high degree of antipathy toward the government and TEPCO. Residents were comforted by the WBC and risk communication efforts, reinforcing. These findings suggest that we recognized the importance of continuous efforts on risk communication.
