World First in High LevelWaste Vitrification A Review of French Vitrification Industrial Achievements

With more than twenty thousand canisters produced to date, AREVA benefits from the largest experience worldwide in commercial vitrification of highly active liquids. AREVA and CEA have formed a joint laboratory (LCV) to keep developing HUN vitrification technology, as demonstrated by the development and implementation of Cold Crucible Induction Melter technology (CCIM). The cold crucible is a compact water-cooled melter in which radioactive waste and glass are heated and molten by direct high frequency induction. This technology can withstand highly corrosive solutions and high operating temperatures, and allows, among other things : 1. a greater flexibility in matrix compositions, 2. a higher production capacity.
