Utah Contributions to the National Geothermal Data System

The Utah Geological Survey, in cooperation with the University of Utah, began a process in 2010 to organize geothermal-related information within the state of Utah as part of the National Geothermal Data System. As the initial phase of the project ends, we describe the data sets compiled to this point in the process. Two major categories of information are (1) data that existed in published and unpublished hardcopy or digital formats, and (2) "supplemental" information gathered as a result of a two-year effort that included thermal-gradient borehole measurements and sampling of new wells. Legacy data in the first category include neo-tectonic and neo-volcanic data, data on individual thermal springs and wells, temperature-depth information, temperature and pressure information from selected oil and gas wells, digital geologic maps of Utah, and bibliographic information. New or "supplemental" data in the second category were collected from studies, mainly in west-central and northwestern Utah, with the focus on the Sevier-Black Rock Deserts of Millard and Juab County. The supplemental data package consists mostly of down-hole information collected from 12 new thermal-gradient boreholes primarily in the form of temperature-depth plots, cutting and core samples, geophysical and lithologic logs, and thermal-conductivity measurements. Supplemental temperature-depth data were also collected from 14 wells of opportunity in these study areas, and new water analyses were obtained from 26 well and spring sources.
