Learning where to put Large Diameter Pipes in Urban and Political Jungles

The Hanlan Water Project is a proposed 96 inch diameter potable water feedermain that will extend a total of 8.7 miles. Approximately 4.6 miles of the alignment is proposed to be tunnel, at depths varying from 52 feet to 92 feet. The remaining length will be installed using open cut trench. The feedermain will run through residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational land uses. Planning of the feedermain has included input from a variety of stakeholders including: traffic engineers, councilors, public relations representatives, operations and maintenance, provincial government, municipal government, local residents, and local business owners. The communications program implemented on this project has built trust and confidence between the public and the project team. Ensuring proper documentation, involvement, and consensus on decisions from the EA phase and through to construction will result in a community that is accepting of the infrastructure being implemented.
