Various methods were attempted to fabricate polyethylene/octaisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (PE/OibPOSS) composites. Microscopic features of the samples were observed to evaluate the effectiveness of these methods in producing nanodielectrics. Furthermore, the samples were subjected to progressive-stress breakdown tests and erosion tests to obtain their dielectric properties. The results showed that none of the attempted methods were able to result in nanodielectrics whereas only micro-composites were obtained. Despite of this, the composites can present a breakdown strength similar to or only slightly lower than that of PE, when OibPOSS bear comparatively small sizes. Moreover, the composites produced by xylene solution blending embrace an enhanced resistance to corona discharges.
