Monthly digital NOAA/AVHRR NDVI images with 8 km spatial resolution, multi-temporal land use data and monthly average air temperature and precipitation data recorded in standard observatories from 1981 to 2000 are obtained in Chinese coastal zone. The relationship between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land use factors and climate factors are explored through spatio-temporal variation analysis. At First, NDVI, monthly average air temperature and precipitation data are normalized to the range of 0.01 to 0.99, then 20 typical areas based on the latitude from north to south in Chinese coastal zone are selected, which is used to analyze the correlation between NDVI and air temperature and precipitation, Then, NDVI spatial and temporal variations are achieved for Chinese coastal area combined with regional land use data. Based on these results, it is pointed out that, in recent 20 years, NDVI annul variation in Chinese coastal zone has a stronger relationship with land use factors; moreover, NDVI spatial variation has obvious strap regularity: NDVI in North China is highly sensitive to precipitation, while it is highly sensitive to air temperature in South China.
