Why Adopting Asset Management is Really About Managing Organizational Change

Utilities face an array of daunting challenges including aging infrastructure, changingregulations, and tightening budgets that require a higher level of stewardship of these limitedresources. Embedding and embracing a new ways of doing business like Asset Management(AM) to meet these challenges can be difficult for any organization, especially for utilities wherepractices, traditions and culture have perpetuated for decades relatively unchanged. Pulling fromthe work of the World Bank and the United Nations in supporting change in developing worlds,institutional capacity development is an approach to change that focuses on understanding theobstacles that inhibit people and organizations from realizing their goals. The approach alsoseeks to enhance their existing habits and abilities that will allow them to achieve measurableand sustainable results in real time. In other words, it leverages existing best practices tostrengthen the skills, competencies, and abilities of people so they are well equipped to masternew competencies and undertake new work and projects.
