Effects of Convergence on Flow Pattern Characteristics in 90-Degree Converging Bends

In relatively flat zones meandering rivers generally form due to alternately eroding sediments in outside of the bend and deposition on the inside. The width of the formed bends decreases through the bend in natural meanders. Convergence rate has a considerable effect on flow pattern and the developed spiral flow. This investigation is conducted to predict flow pattern in 90 degree bend under rigid bed for different convergence ratio (0.5, 0.75, and 1) using SSIIM simulation model. The numerical model verified and calibrated by the obtained experimental results. Velocity profiles and bed shear stresses are estimated using SSIIM simulation model for each convergence ratio. The results show that velocity profiles and location of maximum velocity are closely depending on convergence ratio.
